Four concerts for various solo instruments by the so called Venetian Red Priest (Antonio Vivaldi, 1678-1741)- including the famous "La Notte" RV 104 - are flanked by a head of more or less contemporary masters such Alessandro Scarlatti (1672-1737) and Francesco Mancini (1660-1725), authors of great music one taking over on the other over the years at the helm of the Royal Chapel of Naples. If Alessandro Scarlatti is known for his operas, Mancini (Neapolitan by birth) it is for its oratorios. Both are authors of Sonatas for Recorder (of course the baroque block flute), instrument playing a key role in this CD.
A protagonist, however, primus inter pares, as in this international ensemble of young musicians, improving their musical knowledges in the renowned Royal Conservatory of The Hague - Leonard Minsuk Kwon, baroque recorder, violin Rebecca Huber and Thomas Plusa, Ji Yun Kang cello, guitar and theorbo Cristian Gutierrez , Edoardo Valorz at the harpsichord - the results achieved are excellent in a "collective" of the highest quality and together, prepared as soloists, they sound absolutely balanced.
The overall sobriety is joined with carefully reproduced expressive values (the "affetti") and the intensity of these compositions, as in "La Notte", in which tempos are entitled to the "Ghosts" [“I Fantasmi”] and "Sleep" [“il Sonno”].
However, this philological and careful reading does not sacrifice the sweeping, lively brilliance of expression of the fast tempos, and that immediacy of communication does not fail in the last tempo of the D major RV32 concert.
To signal the presence of the concert, always Vivaldi in D major RV93 in which solo is (unusually, at least as we imagine modern) guitar, which communicates at a time full of inspiration with the two violins and basso continuo.
Sonatas by Scarlatti and Mancini, both in A minor, melt virtuoso agility in the fast movements and a melodic beauty in the slow ones.
